Exercise 1: Networking without Facebook

The goal of the first exercise is to familiarize the student with the online analysis system. We will use the Katiska software to calculate and visualize the correlation structure of a set of social demographics.

Task 1: View the data

Dowload the dataset onto your computer by clicking the link below and saving the file 'countries.xls' on the Desktop (screenshot). You can then view the contents with MS Excel by double-clicking the new icon on the desktop. The info file contains descriptions of the variables.

Task 2: Submit data

Use the link below to open the file submission page. Read the instructions therein (ignore the first paragraph), select the file 'countries.xls', and click the submit button. You should now see an acknowledgement of your submission. If the server cannot accept new jobs due to limited capacity, please repeat the submission procedure. When successful, follow the links on the screen until the job is finished.

Task 3: Review results

If everything went as planned, you should now see a graphical representation of the most important correlations in the dataset (screenshot). The red links denote positive correlation and the blue means negative or inverse association. The brightest and thickest links indicate the strongest associations.

You can click on the small image to see it in full resolution. You can also download the entire result archive by clicking the link on the right (screenshot).
